Three of the Priciest Surround Sound Speakers Around!
October 21, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment
When you write about audio and home theatre systems, you tend to wonder what are the best components out there that are currently available in the world, yes the world. So that being the notion derived for this article, we thought it frightfully exciting to take a look at some of the most expensive speakers that are currently on the market, well some are just mere concepts, but you get the point. We were quite surprised at just what we found, and the how immeasurably expensive some of these noise jamming thumpers were. That being said, we have outlined what we feel are three of the most expensive speakers that you could ever shell out your wad of cash on; and you had better have a pretty thick chunk of change if you wish to afford these beauties!
German Physik Gaudi’s
These pricey German-engineered speakers run a cool $250,000 per pair, and they do not come with a house, a garage or even a sports car, just speakers. Weighing in at monster 1720-pounds, with an impressive frequency range of 15-1900-MHz, these puppies will certainly blow the windows and doors off any manor they reside in. Here is the scoop: they use 4 DDD wave transducers in a line array on each side. If that’s not fancy enough there are 6-inch metal cones that accommodate the mid-bass and 4, 12-inch honeycomb flatcones, housed in steel frames, in the subwoofers of these gargantuan monsters; they are some of the biggest flatcones that have ever been created for any speaker. Finally, to top it all off the wood finish is created from custom and imported veneers that look sweet…to the tune of a quarter million dollars.
Alexandria X-2
Create by Wilson Audio, these are some of the best speakers that money can buy, and you will need a heaping amount of cash to get your hands on them, not to mention being on a waiting list about a mile long. So to get to the specs, here you go: there are two woofers in each speaker one that is 13-inches, and one that is 15-inches, WOW! These bass pounding buffs are complimented by two mid-range 7-inch custom beauties, augmented by a rear-firing super tweeter for the highs, and of course front tweeters on each speaker. They can carry 30-indents per speaker and will fill any room with robust and clear sound like you have never heard the likes of before. And they should, considering they will cost you roughly $135,000 a pair.
Sonnance “Three Wheeler”
When art, lots of money and audio technical engineering meet at an expo that everybody loves to see new gear arrivals make their debut, in enters the ‘Three Wheeler.’ While we were unable to find many specs at all about this speaker concept that was the brainchild of Sonnance and was demonstrated at the CEDIA trade show, we can tell you this: they look cool they are outdoor speakers with Bluetooth capability and they will cost you about $21,000 per speaker.
How to Select the Right Home Audio System for Your Needs (Part Three) Deciding On A System
October 16, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment
Continuing where ‘Part Two’ left off, this part will help you to determine what the best home theater system is for your needs. Keep in mind, the more money that you spend does not necessarily warrant the best audio system for your needs. Sure there are some brands that are lauded by many, when in reality they deliver similar audio clarity as brands that cost nearly half the price. Your best bet when shopping for a home theatre system is to harness the power of the internet and use it to your advantage. The internet is the largest online mall in the universe, and you can easily find a far greater deal than the traditional 200% retail markup you will be subjected to at the local store.
These systems, found at this great online store in the link below, will deliver the audio power that your ears crave, without draining your wallet in the process. Remember shop smart, save money and get the same thing for less!
High Quality Home Theatre Systems For Less Money
Speaker Quality is a Must
You always want to look for speakers that have the best quality for the money that you are going to spend. First and foremost, look for quality, handcrafted speakers that come in wood finished cabinets, typically white, silver or black, and choose the color that will best compliments your home interior. As far as speaker quality goes, look for speakers that offer maximum magnetic shielding, and use high-efficiency domes in their tweeters for the best delivery of those trebles. For subwoofers and mid-ranges speakers, assure that they are least several inches, 3.5” for mids and 6.0” or larger for subs, and that they are made from aluminum or higher quality metals.
As far as kilohertz is considered, optimal ear ranges span from 125 Hz – 20 kHz frequency range, so make sure your speakers meet that bare minimum before shelling out any hard earned cash. Finally, make sure that the speakers that you buy come with a decent all-parts, all-labor warranty, just in case they malfunction. And last, but not least, assure that you match the wattage, ohms and impedance levels with the power amplifier that you are buying, for the best results. One last tip to offer, make sure you buy a self-powered subwoofer so that it does not drain any extra power from your amplifier, this will greatly increase the power of your other speakers.

The Placement of Speakers
The placement of your speakers is essential to your home audio needs for the best delivery of sound. Most 5.1 surround systems will come with 5-6 speakers that can really make your movie experience shine, if you know where to place them properly. There are some simple tricks that you can use to place your speakers effectively around your living room to maximize the audio signals that are being driven to your ears. Here is how.
Free Guide To Practical Home Speaker Placement
Center speaker:
You want to always place this speaker either on the top of your television set, some TVs have a flat screen and this is not possible, in this case place it below, in the center of your TV, so that the sound will emit towards you from the center. The center channel will direct all center signals to the room, and therefore needs to be centered.
Front Left & Right Speakers:
You want to make sure that these front speakers are always placed left and right corresponding to the signal that is being delivered to them, don’t put the left speaker on the right side of your TV. You want the speakers to be at least 6-8 feet apart from each other and you want the facing directly towards your couch. Make sure that there is even space between your left, right and center speaker for optimal sound delivery.
Surround Speaker Placement:
You want to place your surround speakers at least 2-3 feet above the ear level of where you are seated. You ideal want them positioned along side and towards the rear of where the back of your listening area envelops to create the optimal soundstage for your ears. Surround systems with to extra surround speakers can also have those extra satellite speakers wall-mounted for optimal audio clarity.

How to Select the Right Home Audio System for Your Needs (Part One)
October 16, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment
We have commonly heard people fretting over what the best home audio system is for their residence. Many times we see people run out to the store and purchase an illustrious system that costs thousands of dollars and they will never even get to enjoy half of the features or the true spectrum of sound that the system is capable of. Essentially, we feel, this is money that is wasted. So, instead, we decided to create this multi-part blog about how to select the right home audio system for your needs, and with a budget in mind. No more over-buying that tower of speakers that you will never use half the power of. Learn how to shop for and purchase the right home audio system for your needs, on your budget, and start enjoying true home cinema today.
Determining your needs
Before you run out to the store and spend all of your hard earned loot on the home audio system that you may not really need, the first step is determining exactly what your home audio needs truly are. What type of a home do you live in: apartment, condo, house, mansion and so on? Obviously, those with a smaller domicile are going to need a system that delivers less power and takes up far less space than those whose living room has thirty foot tall ceilings.
How to Determine What you Need
Deciding on the speakers
Take this into consideration. You want at least 50-watts of power per speaker and you want a subwoofer that has its own power supply so that it does not drain power from your amplifier. Generally smaller rooms will be louder than a war with 50-watts pumping out the speakers. But medium-sized and larger rooms and rooms that have vaulted ceilings are going to require a bit more amps to really sound good. For a medium-sized room considered a 100-watts per speaker and a 150-watt subwoofer and for those monster living rooms with vaulted ceilings consider 150-watts+ per speaker and a monstrous, booming 250-watt sub.
The Bottom Line
You never want to spend more than you have to for more than you need, that is just wasting money. Buy assuring that you are buying the power outputs that you need, you will both maximize your listening experience and minimize the impact of your purchase on your budget. We will delve into how to find deals on speakers and equipment in ‘Part Two’ of this blog. For now, just keep in mind that more is not necessarily better. And that name-brands offer about the same quality as less-known brands that charge less and equally deliver.

We Ask the All-Too Important Question: What is the Importance of a Crossover?
October 14, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment
When most people think of speakers and home audio systems, they tend to think about power, watts, ohms and output levels. Rarely does the topic of a crossover come into anyone’s mind, but this small little device is as important as ever in all modern day home stereo and audio equipment. Generally, most audio systems will have several different types of speakers that they are sending signals to. There are three common speaker types that receive signals: subwoofers, tweeters and mid-range drivers. And all receive a different type of a signal that is created just for that individual speaker to optimize the final audio output.
The Main Function of Crossovers
A crossover has two sets of primary functions. The first set is that of a number of signal filters, which determine what signal is sent to what speaker, otherwise there would be far less clarity in the sound emitted, and in some cases, speakers may not work at all, or may even become damaged during the signal transfer. The crossover filters divide the sound signals into segments and sends those segments to the appropriate speaker drivers. The second set of functions for the all important crossover is that of eliminating discrepancies in all of the drivers, assuring that all of the drivers in a system are working properly and will deliver the best signal strength and clarity simultaneously.
Types of Crossovers
There are several different types of crossovers that can perform various functions for an audio system, such as two-way crossovers and three-way crossovers. The real difference between these different varying types of crossovers is how they split or divide the signal strength and send that signal strength to the drivers. For example, a two-way crossover will split the signal strength into two parts, consisting of the low and the high frequencies and then send those signals to the drivers. Whereas a more expensive, three-way crossover will split the signal thrice: low, mid and hi, and send those signals to the drivers.
A Speaker and Wiring Expert Catches us up to Speed
This speaker and wiring expert demonstrates with great detail exactly what a crossover is and why it is such a crucial portion of any modern day speaker system. Watch and learn as one of the best there is in this field explains, a step at a time, what the importance and functions of a crossover are and why they are necessary with all modern audio electronics and components.
Tips on Choosing the Right Outdoor Speakers
October 10, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment
There is no better way than to compliment your pristine backyard, and add a soundly fervor to your parties and get-togethers, and all social hosting that you take part in, than by purchasing and installing some high quality outdoor speakers to compliment your backyard and really bring some tunes to it. Think about what you are missing out on. Saturdays by the pool with your favorite music playing, or parties that you host every so often, no need to pull the boom box out of the closet. No matter what your needs for quality outdoor speakers are, you will surely want to know what you are looking for when the time comes to buy them. So we thought it relevant to guide you with this blog.
What types of outdoor speakers are right for your needs?
There are hundreds of varieties of outdoor speakers, and they come in all shapes and sizes, some even disguised as rocks or bushes. First identify what your needs are, and keep in mind that the crazier the speakers are disguised, and the more power that they can handle, generally the more costly that they will be. Here are some good things you want to keep in mind before purchasing any outdoor speakers. And, before you pull out that credit card, make sure you know what you are looking for. Check out this handy outdoor speaker guide.
Some things to consider when buying outdoor speakers
- How much money do they cost, versus power they emit and speaker size?
- Are they easily installed or do you have to pay for professional installation?
- Are they water and weather-proof/resistant?
- Will they look good in your backyard or stand out?
- What type of warranty do they come with?
Differences between weather-resistant and weather-proof
You want to look for outdoor speakers that offer the maximum amount of insulation around the speaker cone itself. While it is nearly impossible to entirely protect any outdoor speaker from moisture seeping in, you can find ones that offer better protection than others. Look for weather-proof versus weather-resistant. Generally, the outdoor speakers that are weather-proof will have a higher amount of insulation around the cone and the wires and will offer more protection and longevity than those that are merely weather-resistant; think along the lines of water-proof watches, versus water-resistant watches and you will have the right idea in mind. Here are some good lines of weather-proof and weather-resistant speakers to consider.
Installing Those Outdoor Speakers
This awesome video (below), courtesy of Audioholic Magazine, demonstrates step-by-step exactly how to install in-wall and on-the-wall speakers, including those that you would buy for outdoor usages.
