The Bose Sound Dock for iPod, Is It Worth the Money?

October 30, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment

The iPod, by Apple, is one of the most intriguing devices that the world has ever laid eyes, and ears, upon. A portable, digital MP3 player that has an array of features and is smaller than most other portable music players. And the music listening world has really taking a liking for all things iPod, including the newer versions which feature video and streaming audio, pod casts and tons more! What is there not to like about the iPod?

We have taken a look at other iPod accessories in the past, including the most expensive iPod to ever be created (click here for that tidbit); and the most expensive iPod speakers ever to be created (click here for this article); and the iPod backpack. So we found it both brain stimulating and interesting to take a look at other iPod accessories. And in our many internet browsing sessions we have found a Bose iPod docking system that is both extravagant and pricey.

Bose SoundDock Portable Digital Music System
Features some of the highest quality Bose speakers, which the world has learned are some of the most clear and audible speakers on the planet, even if you have to shell out big bucks to get your hands on them. This docking station looks small but packs a certain punch. It can be used with any iPod, or other MP3 player, or other audio medium via the auxiliary input jack. Offers a click wheel for easy song selection and boasts a carrying handle. The dock rotates so you can grab your iPod and fly. Well priced online from about: $399.99 at select merchants.

Features & Specs:
• High quality Bose audio reproduction
• Works with any iPod using a click wheel
• Inlcudes: nano, mini, photo and video models
• Plays music with iPhone
• Rechargeable Li-ion battery
• Built-in carry handle
• Rotating dock
• Auxiliary inputs allow lining in of: DVD, CD or MP3 player

The Bottom Line:
For four hundred dollars we were expecting a bit more, to be honest. While this dock is really nice, and there are no doubts about the sound clarity, we still feel that the price tag is crazy high. But if you are an iPod nut, and you like dishing out heaps of cash, then this dock may be right for you. We, on the other hand, are going to have to pass.

The Big Secret Behind Those Little Bose Speakers!

September 23, 2008 by Speakers Fan · Leave a Comment

Have you ever been over a friends’ house that was equipped with a Bose home audio or theatre system and been wowed at how amazingly clear the sound is? And when you ask to see the speakers, which seem nowhere to be found, you are pointed to smaller, satellite speakers that are so tiny they nearly blend in with the room. Yet the sound is amazing, crisp, defined and bright. So, how in the heck did they do this? Well there is a little bit of secrets behind the Bose technology, and we were wondering, “What in the Heck,” as well. So we thought, “Why not?” And decided to tell you just why and how those teeny little speakers are able to blast the walls off of homes.

How do they work?
The Bose WaveGuide™ technology was developed and created by to Dr. Amar Bose and a senior Bose research engineer, Dr. William R. Short, and took the better part of fifteen years to develop. The core of technology was based upon how pipe organs harnessed the sounds from pipes and output them as a much larger wave by ‘guiding’ the sound. The same technology is applied with these speakers. The duo figured out that by simply mounting a loudspeaker inside a trailing and curved apparatus of tubes that could guide the waves, the waves could then be made to be increased, nearly to the size of the sound waves that a massive loudspeaker system creates.

Costs Versus Quality:
While it may be hard for some folks to actually afford to get their ears wrapped around the Bose technology because it does happen to sit in the higher price bracket of audio systems and speakers, this does not mean that there are not comparable brands that cost far less. For those who are truly seeking the best audio clarity and are confined to the limitations of a smaller budget, there are other options.
Check out this forum that offers advice on how to buy comparable systems that are priced well beneath $700 US.

Why is the Technology Better?
There is no question that the Bose technology is superior to other loudspeaker systems. For one, there have been nearly 20 years of collective research and developments made on the Bose speakers you see on store shelves today. Secondly, they take up very little space. A small, two-foot Bose speaker box can effectively outperform a four-foot-tall loudspeaker. Namely because the tubes inside of the box are about seven feet in length, and have the power to create more sound than the largest conventional speaker cone.
