Blu-Ray Versus HD-DVD Wars, Why Blu-Ray Won
October 10, 2008 by Speakers Fan
Does anybody recall the latest bout of digital video medium wars? The HD DVD versus Blu-Ray wars? Well it all started a long time ago in a digital medium galaxy, far, far away. Where two mighty powers that be, decided upon waging a technology war against each other that would take the better part of three decades and inflict bloody, financial casualties amongst all parties involved. And no, we are not talking about Star Wars, we are talking about the medium wars. Think back now, all the way to early 80s, when rival corporations, Sony and Toshiba were pitted against each other with VHS by Toshiba, and BetaMax by Sony. Toshiba won that war, costing Sony billions in research and development. The wound stung deep. That was until just a few short years ago when Sony unleashed their furious financial payback. And repaid the billions lost favor to Toshiba. Ah, isn’t rivalry the greatest, even when it excludes college football?
In the early 2000s, Toshiba released HD DVD, a higher quality medium for digital video that promised uncompromising quality, clarity and compression rates. Everybody lauded HD DVD because it was “The Next Great Thing.” Then along came Play Station Three, by Sony, and it included in some system releases, Sony’s newer, better technology: Blu-Ray DVD. It took a bit for a Blu-Ray to really catch on, as many suckers ran out to the nearest electronics retail super center and spent their hard earned monies. And lo and behold: Sony released the Blu-Ray player to the world, which shot the heck out of the quality, clarity and audio and data compressions that HD DVD could ever hope to offer. And guess what? Toshiba eventually conceded when they realized that they had been had, and has recently announced, earlier this year, that they were discontinuing their HD DVD product line and would now be buying into the licensing of the Blu-Ray technology.
Sorry all you techno-savvy chaps out there who got duped, your HD DVD player is now officially obsolete.
Sony won for several good reasons but namely what follows. Blu-Ray is superior. Using a more accurate laser, and a higher quality medium, it can store more data, access that data faster and offers unparallel audio and digital video clarity that can never be stepped on by HD DVD. And Toshiba, just had to bite the bullet. Hey, Sony is still eating losses from Mini-Disc and BetaMax, so it all evens out in the end anyways.
Blu-Ray Versus HD DVD – This Video Tells It All
In this video that we found on the popular video file sharing website, Youtube.com, a reviewer demonstrates just why Blu-ray won the high definition medium wars. And what a classic battle those recent technology wars were. This video takes you on a very in-depth approach and explains exactly why the Blu-Ray medium is far superior to HD DVD. And why Toshiba was doomed to fail in their prospect from the very onset.
